AL to contest upazila polls without alliance: Quader

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader today said his party will take part in the upcoming upazila elections under the party banner.

“We will not take part in the elections as a part of any alliance. Awami League will contest the upazila elections under the party banner with boat symbol,” he said while addressing at a programme at a hotel in Dhaka. 

Quader, also road transport and bridges minister, urged each component of the 14-party alliance, to join the coming upazila election under the respective party banner.

The Election Commission is likely to announce the schedule for the upazila parishad polls in the first week of February.

The commission may start holding the election in phases from the first week of March, Election Commission Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed said yesterday.
