EC plans EVMs for 150 seats in next JS polls
The Election Commission has taken a plan to use electronic voting machines (EVMs) in at least 150 out of the 300 constituencies in the next 12th parliamentary elections, EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed said today.
“If it is not possible to use EVMs in all seats in the next national elections, we will try to use EVMs at least 50 per cent seats,” Helal Uddin said at a press briefing at the EC Secretariat after a meeting on the use of EVMs in all kinds of elections.
The EC secretary said the commission has decided to use EVMs in all city corporation and municipal elections from now.
He said they have some limitation to use EVMs in all upazila parishad and union parishad elections due to lack of electricity connection and not having good communication.
“The EVMs will be used only in the upazila and union where there are electricity connection and enough good communication system,” Helal Uddin said.
Responding to a query whether the commission needs to discuss with political parties about the use of EVMs, the EC secretary said the commission just has taken a plan to use the EVMs and it will discuss with political parties about the matter.
