Swechchhasebak Dal chief Babu held from BNP demo
Lawmen today detained Shafiul Bari Babu, president of Swechchhasebak Dal, from BNP’s demonstration at Jatiya Press Club, organised to press for Khaleda Zia’s release.
Plainclothes picked him up from the human chain programme. Several supporters were seen throwing motorcycle helmets on the law enforcers during the detention.
Aggrieved by the detention, BNP supporters allegedly vandalised some window panes of the Secretariat, one of our Staff Photographers present at the spot reports.
Earlier in the morning, hundreds of BNP leaders and activists formed the human chain as part of their countrywide protest demanding release of their Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Senior leaders and supporters of BNP gathered in front of Jatiya Press Club since 10:00am with placards and chanting slogans, blocking one side of the road.
Vehicles moving from Paltan to High Court were diverted to Abdul Goni Road instead. As a part of its two-day fresh peaceful protest programme across country BNP will stage a sit-in on Thursday.
On February 8, Khaleda was sent to jail following a court verdict that sentenced her to five years’ rigorous imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case.
