BNP today welcomed the Supreme Court’s verdict that upheld the illegality of parliament’s authority to impeach judges and said it is a victory for the people.

“The government’s conspiracy to control the judiciary has been foiled,” Rizvi Ahmed, senior joint secretary of the party, told reporters at a briefing in Nayapaltan.

Dubbing the verdict as a victory of the people, Rizvi welcomed the ruling. “Through this verdict, the assurance of people getting the right judgement has been pegged deeper.”

The Supreme Court today scrapped the 16th amendment of the constitution, terming it illegal, which was a top debate in the country as it had empowered the parliament to impeach judges.

Previously, the High Court had scrapped the amendment. The Supreme Court today upheld the verdict against a government appeal for the amendment’s restoration.
