Decision on Hasina’s life term Ducsu membership in next meeting: DU VC

Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor and Ducsu President Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman today said that they would reach a decision later over the proposal of giving life term membership of the university’s students’ union to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

“Proposal to make the honourable prime minister a life term member of the Ducsu came up during our first meeting. We accepted the proposal with thanks,” Akhtaruzzaman told reports after the meeting held at the Ducsu Bhaban on DU campus.

“Everybody expressed their consents to the proposal and we will take the decision in our next meeting following the relevant law,” the Ducsu chief said.

Akhtaruzzaman termed the proposal as a great initiative and said, “It is the decision of our executive body and we will undertake a move according to the constitution of the Ducsu.”

However, Duscu Vice President Nurul Haq Nur has voiced his dissent when members of the student body moved to make Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina a lifelong member.

“As there are allegations of irregularities in the Duscu polls. I don’t think that it will be a wise decision to make the prime minister a life term member of the Duscu,” Nur told reporters after the meeting.

“I told in the meeting that the prime minister is an honourable person and the highest executive of the country. It’s not a big factor to make her (Hasina) a life term member of the students’ union,” Nur, also a popular quota reform leader, said.

Besides, there is controversy over the election and a group of students have been carrying out their movement by staging demonstration and procession demanding a fresh election, Nur said.

Opposing VP Nur, Ducsu General Secretary Golam Rabbani said a total of 23 elected leaders out of 25 posts of the Ducsu extended their all-out support to the proposal.

“So, Nur’s voice of dissent is not acceptable democratically and thus it is a solved issue,” Rabbani, also general secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League’s central committee, said.

Earlier, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had been awarded the life term membership of the Duscu, Rabbani also said, adding that the prime minister’s name came up in the meeting as the second person.

The executive body of the Ducsu supported the proposal unanimously and placed a proposal to its president, he said.

“We expect that the next meeting of the Duscu would take a formal decision in this regard,” Rabbani added.

The newly-elected 25-member executive body of the Duscu led by its Vice President Nurul Haque Nur took charges today.
