EC talks: 'BNP’s proposal to be a milestone'
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said his party will place a set of proposals before the Election Commission during its talks on Sunday to hold the 11th parliamentary election in free, fair and credible manner.
“We along with a big team will join the talks and will place a written proposal before the Election Commission. It will be very comprehensive and will remain as a milestone,” Fakhrul said while talking to the reporters in Dhaka.
“We will talk about dissolution of the parliament, army deployment and administrative measures required for the election,” Fakhrul shared the contents of the proposal after visiting the party’s ailing standing committee member Tariqul Islam at his Shantinagar residence.
Fakhrul also inquired health condition of Tariqul Islam and talked to his family members.
The next general election is possible to be held in a free and fair manner if the constitutional body plays its role transparently and independently, the BNP leader said.
“A negative perception has developed among us through the formation process of the incumbent election commission. We are doubt about the commission’s capability and eligibility,” he added.
Fakhrul said his party has been telling frequently that no credible election is possible to be held under the management of the incumbent government as it has brought some “controversial” amendment to the constitution.
Claiming that his party does not want to show any negative approach during the talks, Fakhrul said change in the post of chief of the government is needed to be brought for the sake of holding the next general election in fair way.
“The country overall political atmosphere has been destroyed and the independence of the people’s last resort judiciary has also been snatched. In these circumstances, I can say no fair election will be held in the country,” he added.
“Despite these, we are optimistic,” Fakhrul said adding that his party is trying the best to find out a path so that it can take part in the next general election.
About the supportive government proposal, Fakhrul said his party will not provide any framework in this regard but a perception will be given to the commission stressing its need for the sake of the credible election.
