BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today called for national unity against militancy and extremism in the country.

“The world is united against militancy and extremism but it is ill-fate for us that we are indulging in dirty politics over the issue,” he told reporters.

The senior BNP leader was speaking to journalists at the party’s Nayapaltan central office this afternoon in view of the recent turn of events.

Earlier on Sunday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said she smelled the involvement of BNP and its ally Jamaat-e-Islami over the two foreign nationals’ murder.

BNP later criticised the comments as “unexpected” and “regrettable”of the premier and alleged that the government was trying to shift the blame of the murders.

International media however reported that Middle East-based top terrorist outfit Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility of both killings in Dhaka and Rangpur.

However, authorities have repeatedly said there was no existence of IS in the country and the killings were meant to stir up instability within the country.

Militants and extremists will take opportunity if the country runs in absence of democracy, Fakhrul told reporters today. “Democracy and national consensus is must to combat them”.

“An inclusive general election is also needed immediately if we want to reach a national consensus,” he added calling upon the government to ignore petty political interests and find out the real perpetrators of the foreigners’ killings.
