Hasina to select AL-backed mayoral aspirants

Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina will select the party-backed mayoral candidates for the upcoming elections to 234 municipalities.

The ruling party today informed the decision to the Election Commission through a letter signed by its General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam, AL Assistant Secretary ABM Riazul Kabir told reporters after submitting the letter to EC office around 1:00pm.

Earlier, the EC issued letters to all the 40 registered political parties with directives to comply with the newly formulated legal provisions regarding candidate selection.

As per the rule, political parties willing to contest the polls will send a letter to the returning officers mentioning the names of party-authorised persons, who will pick the candidates. Copies of the letter will have to be sent to the Election Commission.

Meanwhile, Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad will select the party-backed mayoral candidates, said in an official letter of JP that also submitted to the EC today.
