4 Meherpur BCL men sent to jail for assaulting cops
A Meherpur court sent four activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) to jail for allegedly assaulting policemen in the district town today.
Meherpur Judicial Magistrate Court passed the order following a lawsuit filed in this regard, our Kushtia correspondent reports quoting police.
The four are Meherpur district BCL unit President Abdus Samad Bandhan and his followers Ibrahim Hossain, Shishir Ali and Ashiq Sawdagor.
According to witnesses, Ibrahim beat up fellow activist Suruj Ali after an altercation at Meherpur District Stadium during a Victory Day programme this morning.
Three on duty police detained Ibrahim. Then, a group of BCL men rushed to the spot and tried to snatch Ibrahim from the police custody.
At one stage, officer-in-charge (OC) of Meherpur Sadar Police Station tried to control the situation but he was assaulted by the BCL men, the witnesses said.
After the incident, additional police arrested Bandhan, Ibrahim, Shishir and Ashiq.
Police lodged a case in this connection and produced them before the court this afternoon, said Sheikh Mustafizur Rahman, additional superintendent of police in Meherpur.
