BNP Standing Committee Member Moudud Ahmed today alleged that a one-party “Baksal-like” rule is now on in the country, in the disguise of democracy.

“One-party rule is on. There is no rule of law, effective parliament and freedom of press in the country,” Moudud, a former law minister, claimed at a press conference at BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office in Dhaka.

Claiming that one-party Baksal rule was introduced formally in 1975, Moudud said the government is running the country, following the same rule informally, by destroying the spirit of the Liberation War.

“The ruling quarter reintroduced autocracy and fascism in the guise of democracy,” the BNP leader said, calling upon people irrespective of political affiliation, class and profession to remain united to reestablish a democratic system in the state.

BNP Standing Committee Members Abdul Moeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Selima Rahman and some senior leaders of the party, among others, were present at the press conference.
