‘BCL trying to kill me by launching planned attacks’

Says Ducsu VP Nur

Vice President of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) Nurul Haque Nur today alleged that the activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League are launching planned attacks on him one after another in a bid to kill him.

“The goons of BCL have been launching planned attacks as part of a plot to kill me since I got elected as Ducsu VP,” Nur said while addressing a press conference at Madhur Canteen on DU campus this noon.

Sadharan Chhatra Odhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad, a students’ platform that led the quota reform movement, organised the conference to express its reaction following the recent attack on Nur and other activists in Bogura allegedly by BCL men on Monday.

“After the Brahmanbaria incident where the BCL men foiled an iftar party, I informed BCL central president and general secretary in this regard and they assured me of taking steps. However, the same thing happened on the very next day in Bogura,” Nur said.

“These incidents were not normal and were completely pre-planned. Ever since I got elected as Ducsu VP, BCL has been trying to have be killed by carrying out these attacks with its goons,” he alleged.

“When I was returning to Dhaka on an ambulance after the Bogura incident, the ambulance malfunctioned on the way. Then I was returning in a microbus. That microbus was hit by a truck from the side in an attempt to kill me. The truck belongs to Sirajganj municipality mayor,” Nur said.

Nur said that he was offered post in the BCL central committee by its general secretary on condition that he would involve in politics for BCL and would not speak for any other issues.

“Since I did not agree to their offer, they are planning to kill me,” he alleged.

Nur, also a popular student leader of the quota reform movement, alleged that the BCL men have “deviated from the ideologies of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman” and are motivated in “militant activities”.

“BCL is an organisation built by Bangabandhu himself. However, by foiling an iftar mahfil in the holy month of Ramadan, BCL has proved that it is now turning into a militant organisation. Their recent activities also resemble militant activities. Earlier they set on fire the stage for a concert on the occasion of Pahela Baishakh,” Nur said.

Mentioning that the Sadharan Chhatra Odhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad is not a political student organisation and is not against the government or any other political party, Nur said that the platform will only keep raising its voice against injustice, irregularities and discriminations in the society and in the country as a whole.

“When this country’s people find themselves pushed back against the wall, they always come down to the streets in protest. The common people are with us,” Nur said.

“We want to see the implementation of the rule of law that our honourable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina often speaks about. We hope to see that the BCL activists who were involved in the attacks are brought to the books as a proof that the rule of law exists in the country,” he added.
