BNP MP gets 5yrs in jail for dodging taxes
A Dhaka court today sentenced BNP lawmaker from Chapainawabganj-3 constituency Harunur Rashid to five years’ imprisonment and also fined Tk 50 lakh in connection with a case filed for dodging taxes while importing a luxurious car in 2007.
The court also sentenced Enayetur Rahman Bappi, former managing director of NTV, to two years’ imprisonment and fined him Tk one lakh while Ishtiak Sadek, owner of Sky Autos, was jailed for three years and fined Tk 40 lakh.
Harunur, Enayetur and Sadek will have to serve six months, two months and six months respectively if they fail to pay the fine.
Judge Shaikh Nazmul Alam of the Special Judge Court-4 of Dhaka handed down the verdict in presence of Harunur Rashid while the rest two are on the run.
The court also cancelled the bail of Harunur and sent him to jail.
The punishment of the fugitives will be effective from the day of their arrest or surrender, the judge said.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against Harunur and two others with Pallabi Police Station on March 17, 2007.
ACC pressed charges against them on July 18, the same year.
