Govt has to ensure freedom of media to strengthen democracy: Jatiya Party MP Salma Islam
Jatiya Party MP Salma Islam in parliament today said the government will have to ensure complete freedom of media and opposition party for strengthening the base of democracy.
Participating in the discussion on the proposed budget for 2021-22 fiscal year, the opposition MP also suggested that the government declare loan defaulters as persona non grata socially and to confiscate their properties to realise the defaulted loans.
"The road for all types of democratic practices including criticising the government and freedom of speech should remain open," she said.
Salma Islam, elected in reserved seats for women in parliament also said it is only proper for the government to welcome criticism on any issue and give due importance to that matter.
"I believe the country's democracy will be stronger if the government gives due diligence to the opposition party's criticism and constructive opinion of media," she added.
On the loan defaulters, Salma Islam said the government should not invite the loan defaulters in any state function.
She also said the government should take stern measures so that loan defaulters cannot lead a lavish life with the defaulted loan money.
"Air ticket should not be sold to them. License of their cars should be revoked," she added.
The JP MP also called upon the finance minister to make the VAT system more business friendly.
