Taqi killing: Arrest of Shamim Osman demanded
Speakers at a protest programme in Narayanganj have demanded arrest of ruling Awami League lawmaker Shamim Osman accusing him for killing Tanwir Muhammad Taqi in 2013.
They also demanded arrest of Shamim Osman’s son Ayan Osman and nephew Ajmeri Osman, son of former Jatiya Party lawmaker Nasim Osman.
However, none of them are among those shown accused in the case filed over the murder.
Talking at the programme held on the premises of Ali Ahmmad Chunka Nagar Library and Auditorium in the city’s DIT area last night, they alleged the AL lawmaker had “planned the murder” while his son and nephew had “orchestrated the murder”, reports our local correspondent.
Poet Halim Azad, member secretary of Taqi Mancha and former president of Narayanganj Press Club, said “We demand prompt arrest of them and urge the authorities to bring them to book”.
Taqi, 17, son of Rafiur Rabbi, a cultural activist and the convener of Narayanganj Gonojagoron Mancha, was abducted on March 6, 2013 and found dead in the Shitalakkhya river two days later.
People, including the victim’s father, have since then blamed the members of Shamim Osman’s family in the city for the murder.
Eight of the accused in the case filed over the sensational murder incident have been absconding, while five others have been arrested. Two of the arrestees – Yusuf Hossain Liton and Sultan Shawkat – gave confessional statements.
The murder of the 17-year-old high school graduate has been much discussed for the alleged involvement of family members of ruling party MP Shamim Osman.
In June 2013, Rab-11 arrested some “aides” of the Osman family and raided Ajmeri Osman’s office in Narayanganj city in August 2013, and found evidence of torture there.
Later in March 2014, Rab told media that they found involvement of Ajmeri and his 11 associates in Taqi’s murder. Ajmeri is the son of ex-Jatiya Party MP Nasim Osman and nephew of Shamim Osman.
However, no further headway has yet been made into the murder case over six years after the incident.
