Terming present ruling system "fascism", BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today alleged that the government has completed its preparation to run the country under "one-party administration".

"They have put a mask of democracy upon the ruling system…none has the right to say something. If someone differed with them, he has to face false cases and land in jail," said Fakhrul.

He made the comments while addressing a discussion at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in Dhaka organised by the daily Amar Desh newspaper to observe 1,000 days of its acting editor Mahmudur Rahman’s staying in jail.

Police arrested Mahmudur Rahman on April 13, 2013 and he has been facing 75 cases on different charges including sedition, arson and corruption.

Fakhrul observed that the people of the country have no alternative to building unity to oust the government.

"The country observes calmness and cool atmosphere everywhere. There is no fight for the restoration of the rights. But this is not the real outlook of the country. People of the country always sacrificed their lives for their rights," said the BNP leader.

Pointing to the split in the country’s journalist community, he said the government has divided it like other sectors for its own interest.

The BNP spokesperson said though their movement did not get success but he hoped that it will be successful in the near future and people will raise their voices to get back their rights.

He also demanded immediate release of Mahmudur Rahman and president of the faction of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) Shawkat Mahmud.
