Order on Fakhrul’s bail Jul 5

The Supreme Court today fixed July 5 for passing orders on three government petitions against the High Court order that had granted bail to BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in three cases.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha set the date after holding hearing on the petitions.

Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, a lawyer for Fakhrul, prayed to the apex court to grant his client bail, saying the BNP leader is not involved in any offence and there is no specific allegation against him.

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam opposed the HC’s bail order, saying that there are allegations against him of instigating criminals for vandalising vehicles and arson.

The HC granted bail to Fakhrul on June 21 this year in the cases filed with Paltan Police Station on January 4, 5 and 7 under exclusive substances act 1908.

The government on June 29 filed the three petitions with the SC seeking stay on the HC order of bail.
