People concerned over PM’s India visit: BNP

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said the whole nation is concerned over the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s upcoming India visit scheduled for April 7.

“Prime minister’s [Sheikh Hasina] Indian visit is widely discussing among people as the entire nation is worried over the visit. A minister has already told that Teesta water sharing deal will not be signed during the visit. Then, treaty on which issues will be signed?” he questioned.

Addressing a meeting of Dhaka City Unit BNP at the city’s Bhasani auditorium, he said country’s people will not accept any agreement if it is signed with India putting the country’s independence and sovereignty under threat. 

Fakhrul also said it has become crucial for Bangladesh to sign a deal with India on the Teesta water sharing issue.

“No other anti-state treaty rather than the Teesta water sharing deal will be accepted,” Fakhrul also said adding, “BNP will not compromise on the question of the country’s existence.”

He also said the government is yet to reveal which agreement is going to sign with India during the PM’s visit. “But we are worried over the media report about the deals.”

He said it is necessary for the premier to visit India because the remaining problems between the two countries will have to be resolved.

Pointing to recent increase of militant activities in the country, Fakhrul said the government is using militancy issue to put blame on BNP.

He also urged PM to unite people of all walks of life to tackle the menace of militancy.
