Prepare for resisting repression: Fakhrul
Describing the country's prevailing situation as worse than during the Pakistan rule, BNP today called upon its party men to prepare for building a strong resistance against the government’s repression.
"Awami League has broken the record of brutality carried out by Pakistan before ‘71. Our backs have been pushed against the wall. It is the time to build resistance," BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said.
The BNP leader blamed the ruling Awami League for its anti-people and anti-democratic stances and called upon all to come forward protecting the country from the verge of its absolute collapse.
The government has not only snatched the people’s voting rights, it has also snatched their civil rights, Fakhrul said, underscoring the need to eliminate the "autocratic and monstrous government”.
Speaking at a programme at Bhashani Auditorium in Paltan, Fakhrul expressed his annoyance at the halt on bail of party chief Khaleda Zia.
“The High Court has granted her (Khaleda) bail but, the Appellate Division stayed it keeping the issue pending until the Eid vacation that will prolong her stay in jail,” he said.
On February 8, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was sent to jail following a court verdict that sentenced her to five years’ rigorous imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case.
Since then, BNP and its like-minded political parties, socio-cultural organisations and different professional bodies have been carrying our movement in a peaceful manner pressing home their demand for immediate release of the BNP chief.
