Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda today said the Rangamati gun attack was an outcome of the regional problem.

“The people who contested the election might have involved with the attack. It is our prediction, but we still believe that it was an outcome of the regional level problem,” the CEC said.

The CEC was talking to the reporters in a press conference at the Media Centre of the Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka’s Agargaon area this noon.

Except the incident in Rangamati, Huda said the overall situation across the electoral area in the second phase of the upazila parishad election was good enough.

At least seven people, including two polling officials and four Ansar personnel, were shot dead and 14 people were injured in the deadly attack in Rangamati's Baghaichhari during the second phase of upazila election on Monday evening.

Expressing strong condemnation to the attack, the CEC said the commission has rescued the injured people and taken them to hospital moments after the attack carried out by armed criminals.

He said each family of the victims will be provided Tk 5.50 lakh while the injured person to be given Tk one lakh or Tk 50,000 for facilitating the treatment on the basis of their health conditions.

Huda said they would try to provide job to the family members of the deceased at the commission if they get any scope.

Responding to a quarry, the CEC said, “It was a clandestine attack and nobody apprehend of such attack although we have deployed army personnel in the area as precocious.”

“It is actually difficult to assess when and how the criminals carry out the attack in the dark night in the hilly area, “Huda added.

The incident took place in Noymile area on the fatal day when the security personnel, including two women, and the polling officials on two jeeps were returning to the upazila town with election results and polling materials.

The attackers are still unknown.

On Tuesday, Chattogram divisional commissioner has formed a seven-member probe committee, headed by the director of local government of Chattogram division, to investigate the incident.
