Rizvi’s HC bail upheld
The Supreme Court today upheld a High Court order that had granted bail to BNP leader Rizvi Ahmed in two vandalism and arson cases.
The cases were filed with Motijheel Police Station on January 12 and 22 on charges of vandalising and torching vehicles during the anti-government movement enforced by BNP-Jamaat-led alliance.
On August 31, the HC granted an interim bail to Rizvi in the cases following his two bail petitions.
Today, the three-member bench of the appellate division headed by Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana dismissed two appeals filed by the government against the HC order.
However, Rizvi’s lawyer Sagir Hossain Leon told The Daily Star that his client cannot get release from jail now as he is shown arrested in four other cases.
Rizvi, who is now in the prison cell of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, was arrested on January 31. He got bail from the HC in 19 among total 21 cases so far, Leon said.
