Rowshan appointed deputy opposition leader in JS
Jatiya Party (Ershad) today appointed Rowshan Ershad, senior co-chairperson of the party, as deputy leader of the opposition in the House, relieving GM Quader from the post.
“As Chairman of Jatiya Party and leader of the opposition in the House, I am removing GM Quader from the post of deputy leader. Begum Rowshan Ershad has been nominated for the post,” Ershad came up with the decision in a press statement issued this afternoon.
The decision has been taken according to the article 20(1)K of the party’s constitution and a proposal has already been sent to the speaker of the house to take necessary measures in this regard, the press statement said.
Yesterday, the Jatiya Party chairman relieved his brother GM Quader from the post of co-chairman, saying that he has failed to discharge his duties and rather created divisions within the party.
In a statement last night, he said he had earlier declared that Quader would be in overall charge of leading the party in his absence and expected that he would be elected party chairman in the next council.
“But considering the party's present overall situation, I withdrew my earlier announcement,” said the former military ruler, who has a reputation for making unpredictable political moves.
He said Quader totally failed to discharge his duties and that is why the party's organisational activities lost steam . Party's senior leaders also expressed frustration over Quader's leadership.
But he will be a presidium member of the party, said Ershad.
The JP Parliamentary Party will decide whether Quader will be the deputy leader of the opposition in parliament, the JP chief added.
