SC bail for BNP's Shamsher, no bar to release
The Supreme Court today upheld bail for BNP leader Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury, given to him earlier by the High Court, paving way for his release.
Chamber judge of the apex court's Appellate Division Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed "no order" on two appeals moved by Additional Attorney General Momtaz Uddin Fakir challenging the HC bail.
Shamsher was implicated in two cases filed over attacking ruling Awami League Netrokona-1 lawmaker Chhabi Biswas and violence near Dhaka Medical College Hospital - both on December 24 last year.
Detectives picked up Shamsher from his Banani home on January 8 this year in connection with the case filed with Shahbagh police for attacking MP Biswas.
High Court granted him ad-interim bail in the two cases on May 6, moved by two petitions filed by Shamsher, and sought explanation from the government asking why he should not be given regular bail.
Now, with bail secured from the apex court in both cases, Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury has no legal complications to his release from jail, his lawyer M Masud Rana told The Daily Star.
