Shahriar Rumi, a central executive committee member of BNP and vice president of its Faridpur unit, has resigned from all posts of the party intending to return to the ruling Awami League.

“I have resigned from all posts of BNP out of my conscience. We all pro-Liberation forcers will have to be united under the banner of the ruling Awami League,” Rumi told The Daily Star this afternoon.

“There is no alternative of Awami League in the current context to lead the country upholding the spirit of the Liberation War and so I have taken the decision,” Rumi said.

“Addressing the party chief Khaleda Zia, I sent my resignation letter to her Gulshan office through a courier service and the same copy to the party’s Nayapaltan central office this afternoon,” he added.

“Madam (Khaleda Zia) has made me an executive committee member of her party with due respect but I have resigned the party on ideological ground,” he added.

In 2001 general election, Rumi, who was a member of the then Awami League sub-committee, participated in the poll of Faridpur-5 constituency as an independent candidate after being deprived of getting the party ticket.

“In the face of attack carried out on my followers by the than AL lawmaker Kazi Jaffarullah, I joined BNP.

Earlier on October 29, BNP Vice-Chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury resigned from all posts of the party citing health reasons.

As a freedom fighter, subject to my health condition, I shall always endeavour to work for the welfare of the people and the nation while upholding the values of our glorious War of Independence, Mobin told reporters after submission of his resignation.
