Jhantu gets AL nomination for Rangpur city polls
Awami League today nominated Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu as mayoral candidate for the Rangpur City Corporation election scheduled to be held on December 21.
The announcement came after a meeting of Awami League’s Local Government Nomination Board at Gono Bhaban this evening with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Jhantu, advisor of Rangpur district unit AL, secured victory in the maiden Rangpur City Corporation election, which took place on December 20, 2012.
At that time, Jhantu participated as an independent candidate in the election.
The nomination board interviewed 16 aspirants and selected Jhantu as the party’s candidate.
Jhantu was elected as upazila chairman in 1987. Later, he was elected as Rangpur municipality chairman in 1992 and was elected MP of Jatiya Party in 1996.
Later, he joined Awami League.
Besides, Jatiya Party already announced Mostafizur Rahman Mostofa, president of Rangpur City unit of the Party, as its mayoral candidate.
The Election Commission on November 5 declared the scheduled for Rangpur City Corporation election.
According to the schedule, the last date for submission of nomination papers is November 22 while nomination papers will be scrutinised between November 25 and 26.
The last date of withdrawal of nomination is December 3. The date for symbol allocation has been fixed on December 4.
