Rangpur hartal progressing peacefully

The 48-hour hartal enforced by the Jatiya Party in Rangpur division is progressing peacefully today.

No incident of violence was reported from the division till filing the report around 11:00am, reports our Rangpur correspondent.

However, the roads were empty and shops shuttered down from this morning, fearing violence.

The two factions of JP enforced the shutdown protesting party Chairman HM Ershad’s “detention”, as the JP leader has been confined in the Combined Military Hospital, Dhaka since December 12.

The government however cleared its stance insisting that Ershad was sent to the CMH for treatment, a claim that the JP chief refuted saying that he was detained there in the name of treatment.

A faction of the JP called the 48-hour hartal while another 24-hour demanding release of their party chief.
