Road accident: Bus-truck collision leaves 11 dead in Jhenaidah

Eleven people were killed and 13 others injured in a collision between a bus and a truck in Jhenaidah's Kaliganj upazila this afternoon.

Of the deceased, eight people have been identified so far.

They are Reshma Khatun of Chuadanga Sadar; Mostafizur Rahman (25), a former secretary of Chhatra Dal's Trilochon union unit in Kaliganj; Younus Ali (27) of Jhenaidah Sadar; Waliul Ali (26) of Chuandanga; and Uzzal Hossain (48) driver of the bus; Sanatan Das (28) of Bhatpara in Kaliganj; Abdul Aziz (55) of Jhenaidah's Shailkupa, and Harun-or-Rashid (25) of Kotchandpur in Jhenaidah.

Reshma's brother Sohel Rana said that his sister was coming from Jashore after appearing for her honour's examination. She was supposed to reach Chuadanga around 4:30pm, he added.

He saw the breaking news on television, and rushed to the spot after he found his sister's mobile phone was switched off.

Identity of three other deceased could not be known yet.

Quoting an eyewitness Shamsul Islam, our local correspondent reports that the bus and truck, coming from opposite directions, collided head-on.

The truck hit the bus again and it overturned, he said.

The accident occurred in Barbazar area around 3:00pm when the bus bound for Jhenaidah collided with the truck, which was heading to Jashore, said Mahfuzur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Kaliganj Police Station.

Nine people were killed on the spot, the official said.

Harun-or-Rashid and another person, aged around 25, died at Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex and a local clinic. Other injured were admitted to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex and Jashore General Hospital, the OC added.

Vehicular movement was disrupted on the road for half an hour, our local correspondent reports.

Jhenaidah's Deputy Commissioner Saroj Kumar Nath said the authorities will give the deceased's families Tk 20,000 each for their funerals.

Kaliganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Subarna Rani Saha visited the spot.
