India wants safe, sustainable Rohingya repatriation

India has conveyed to Myanmar the need for speed, safe, and sustainable repatriation of Rohingya refugees from Bangladesh as Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today wrapped up a two-day visit to that country.  

The Rohingya issue came up for discussions when Sushma called on Myanmar President U Win Myint and Foreign Minister and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, reports our New Delhi correspondent.

Sushma also met the Commander-in-Chief of the Myanmar Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, said a statement released by the Indian External Affairs Ministry.

In her meetings with the Myanmar leaders and officials, Sushma "underlined the need for safe, speedy and sustainable return of displaced persons to Rakhine State," said the statement.

Although Bangladesh and Myanmar signed in January a bilateral agreement for Rohingya repatriation, the process is yet to take off.

The Indian External Affairs Minister also reiterated India's readiness and commitment to helping the Myanmar in addressing issues related to Rakhine province.
