14 Rohingyas, fleeing Bhasan Char, held in Ctg’s Sandwip
Fourteen Rohingyas were detained in Chattogram's Sandwip upazila this morning when they were fleeing from Bhasan Char -- around 40 km off Noakhali.
According to police, they fled from Bhasan Char with the help of a local broker and tried to return to Cox's Bazar.
With them, a total of 29 Rohingyas have so far been held while fleeing Bhasan Char, reports our Chattogram staff correspondent.
Basir Uddin Khan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sandwip Police Station, told The Daily Star, "They fled from Bhasan Char by boat and landed at Sarikait union in the upazila when locals caught them."
"During interrogation, they told police that a local broker of Noakhali helped them to flee Bhasan Char in exchange of cash," the OC added.
The detainees -- eight females, two males and four children -- were heading for a Rohingya camp in Cox's Bazar, the police official added.
Police filed a case against them under The Foreigners Act, 1946.
