The ruling Awami League has called upon Russia, China and India to accelerate the safe and dignified repatriation of the forcibly displaced Rohingyas to their homeland in Rakhine state of Myanmar.

The ruling party made the call at a briefing with foreign diplomats and representatives of international organisations stationed in Dhaka at a city hotel today.

Around 10 lakh Rohingyas have fled to Bangladesh, including about 660,000 who arrived in the country since August last year when the Myanmar military launched a brutal crackdown in Rakhine.

International Affair sub-committee of the Awami League organised the briefing on the country's current political issues where over 50 diplomats and representatives, including ambassadors and high commissioners of several countries, were present there.

At the briefing, AL leaders highlighted the development works undertaken the incumbent government and also described the destructive activities of BNP-Jamaat alliance in the name of politics before and after the last national election held on January 5, 2014, according to the party insiders.

The briefing was conducted by the party's Presidium Member Lt Col (retd) Faruk Khan, Joint General Secretary Dipu Moni, its Sub-Committee Chairman Ambassador Mohammad Jamir, International Affairs Secretary Shammi Ahmed and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam.
