The Internet has been on my mind this week. That is not to say it isn't on my mind constantly, every breathing second of my life is spent thinking of things on the Internet, of how to be on the Internet. I even think about how others have been on the Internet and whether I like what I see.
Even if I don't like what I see, the Internet will impact me and everything around me. It's easy to discard opinions on the Internet as inconsequential ramblings within echo chambers, yet, the anger, fear, and sadness that is caused by a spewing of hatred on the Internet is a real thing, something that is going to be made clear over and over again during this month of June.
Activism on the Internet, or simply the act of expressing and rallying behind opinions online, might seem trivial. But it isn't trivial for an oppressed individual for whom a semblance of support, even from strangers, could be a guiding light. The meathead you are arguing with on Facebook may not change their minds, but people who are reading this argument, who are open to having their minds changed – these people exist. And they are worth it.
