If I recall correctly, the first-ever cover story of SHOUT coined and explored the themes surrounding "brain gain". In contrast, the concept of "brain drain" defines how highly skilled and/or qualified individuals leave their home country and emigrate to a foreign land.

For what reasons? In search of what? These are the real questions.

When a family member or friend moves abroad, the matter is of great pride for those near and dear to them. Sure, the quality of education is higher and so is the salary when you compare currencies; one enjoys freedom of speech and might even feel safe to travel past dark. The grass, it seems, is always greener on the other side.

Before we "heart" react to every other social media post that says "Omuk has moved to Bidesh", perhaps we should ask where and how we failed to keep hold of such a talented and bright person like Omuk. Could we not provide them with amazing research opportunities, or a job that pays both in money and respect? Can we not ensure an independent lifestyle and safety for them?

And now these become unreal questions.
