Circles
This was going to be quick. She knew it; it had to be.
She tried to sit down to process the absurd turn of events the night had taken. Who would've seen this coming? She wished she had something to wrap around herself to keep her from freezing. What time was it? She didn't feel like checking her phone. What if there was another text from him? She wrapped her arms around herself to keep warm.
The roof top was quiet. She glanced up to see the clear sky. The worst part about living in a city had to be that you could never find a star when you wanted to. Does anyone know where she is?
"Hi."
Where did the voice come from? She squinted her eyes and made out the silhouette standing at a distance. Oh no! She paused mid breath.
"What are you doing here?" she asked, jumping up hurriedly. He had left. He had gone.
"I wanted to come see again if you were okay." How funny was that?
"I'm good. I'm really fine. You should go," she said, clasping herself tighter with her arms.
Why was he coming closer? She could feel her breath getting heavier, a weird knot forming in her chest. As he took one step then another towards her, the night became darker. Should she walk away?
"Did you not go home?" she asked.
"I did. But as soon as I reached home, I wanted to see you again."
Why did she have a knack for bringing herself into these situations?
"I'm fine now. Trust me. You should really go home. It's late."
"Nonsense," he kept getting closer. Now he was standing an arm's length away from her, towering over her.
"I said I'm fine" she argued, looking up at his shadowed face in the dark. Her head was starting to spin. No, no, no.
She grabbed herself tight. "I want you to go away."
"It's okay. You're going to be fine," he said as he stepped closer and tried to wrap an arm around her.
"I said I'm fine!" she yelled as she tried to draw back and break free. "I said I'm fine!" She pushed him back. Clearly she couldn't overpower him. She tried to jerk away but he kept grabbing at her.
She could feel a lump in her throat, she couldn't swallow. Her vision started to blur. Was that the sound of her phone falling from her hand?
"I just want you to go away!" She yelled as she elbowed him to break free. What if he hurt her? Why couldn't he just go away and leave her alone? Why did she keep making poor decisions that would leave her at the centre of a mess? Was all of this her fault? No, she had to stop blaming herself for everything. She started sobbing uncontrollably.
She collapsed on the floor. By the time her vision was clear enough from crying she realised he had gone.
She called out his name in the dark. Quiet. Empty. She called his name louder. No response. She screamed out his name now knowing there won't be any reply, the scream accompanied by sobbing.
She took some time to compose herself and wipe her tears. She was scared and lonely. Then she picked up her phone and called a familiar number. "Hello? I'm scared. Are you there?"
