Tips on landing a tuition
Finding Nemo was hard but finding a decent tuition is harder. For Bangladeshi teenagers, one of the most popular ways to pay for their fancy food cravings is to get into the "home tutoring" profession. Here, you will face rejection like you never faced before. You will question your capabilities. To help you get through this journey here are 5 tips for achieving success in the magical word of tuitions.
1. KNOW THYSELF
In order to get a tuition, you must know for which category you qualify. There are 3 main categories:
a. People who study in top universities
b. People who study in middle-tier public universities
c. People who study in private universities
If you are from the first category, you will do well in this profession without even breaking a sweat. If you belong to the second, getting a tuition won't be hard but the experience might be bitter.
If you belong to the third however, things just got infinitely more difficult for you. Might as well spend your time and energy doing other jobs. But if you are too stubborn for this cruel world, feel free to try.
After categorising yourself, it's time to write your CV.
2. ADVERTISING YOURSELF
Once you have evaluated your capabilities, it's time to advertise yourself as a tutor. The process is as follows
Step 0: (This is for category "a" people) Exist. If you manage to take in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide after getting into top tier universities, you will get gigs.
Step 1: Let your friends and family know that you are available for tutoring.
Step 2: Join Facebook groups such as "Tuition wanted". There are quite a few of these.
Step 3: Send out flyers with your contact details on it.
Step 4: Post an advertisement in the newspaper about your unbelievable qualities as a teacher.
Step 5: Find someone who is skilled in the mystic arts and go over to the dark side. (Applicable for categories "b" and "c")
3. COMING IN CONTACT
"Tutor needed for pre-school student. Teacher must be from XUET."
Once you have advertised yourself, you are sure to come in contact with offers like these which tell you that you are not qualified for teaching even a pre-schooler.
Don't be disheartened. Nothing is wrong with you. It's not your fault. It's the system.
4. HANDLING REJECTION
After being devastated with a few rejections, you will probably want to give up. And you should. But I know you won't.
Pull yourself back together. A tuition will come your way someday. The key is to hang in there.
5. GETTING BACK OUT THERE
The search for a tuition is long. You will cross paths with a lot of students and parents along the way. Most of them will not want you, always looking for more experience in teaching from students, like that makes sense.
But do remember, your inability to get a tuition does not define you. It just says you have terrible luck.
