The Academy Awards, or better known as The Oscars, is undoubtedly the most coveted and revered award ceremonies of Hollywood. The 90th iteration of the Academy Awards, held last Sunday 4th March 2018, showed as much as drama and flair as one would expect from such a grand celebration; however, in its entirety, this year's Oscars is being claimed as "one of the most predictable Oscars yet"!
Among the nine nominations for the most coveted award of them all, the Best Picture Award, the two clear favorites were Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and The Shape of Water. Unsurprisingly, these two were the true spotlights of this year's Oscars. After multiple awards from the likes of Golden Globes, BAFTA and Screen Actors Guilds, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri was arguably the more favored contender to bring home the big prize. Directed by the British playwright Martin McDonagh, the film depicts the tale of a mother who puts up billboards addressed to her daughter's unsolved murder, thus challenging the local police force that had failed to catch the culprit. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri has been critically acclaimed since its release, and continued to be so in the Oscars as well; grabbing two awards in its name and a total of seven nominations in different categories. Despite not being able to bring home the title of the 'best of the best', Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri was definitely an amazing contender.

Without further adieu, let's move on to the biggest name of Oscars 2018! The Shape of Water made huge splashes by not only having a whopping 13 nominations, not just by winning a total of four awards, but by being named the "Best Motion Picture of the Year"; the title adored, respected and desired by filmmakers everywhere. The Mexican director Guillermo del Toro sported everlasting glee ever since the night had ended; and why wouldn't he? It isn't everyday your film and direction is termed the best of the year by the most revered film critics in the world! While The Shape of Water did have its share of doubters due to its unconventional story of a woman falling in love with a human-like aquatic creature, Oscars 2018 proved that films of unique perspectives are more than welcomed in the grandest stage of them all. Perhaps this has opened new doors for experimental cinema in the future; we can only hope!
We can't forget the other award winners, can we? Good ol' Gary Oldman won the "Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role" Award for Darkest Hour, thus adding yet another achievement to his long list of accolades. Jordan Peele made records by becoming the first black screenwriter to win the "Best Original Screenplay" award for his horror film Get Out. Disney's Coco won two awards, for both Best Animated Feature Film and Original Song, showing how animated movies can still be worthy contenders in the Oscars. All in all, the 90th Academy Awards wasn't a night of glorious surprises like last year, but in itself, it was certainly a majestic glory to behold!
