Indian, Pak troops exchange fire at Kashmir LOC

Pakistani troops today opened fire and shelled mortars along the de facto border with Rajouri district in India's Jammu and Kashmir, Indian officials said.

Indian troops gave a befitting reply, resulting in heavy damage to Pakistani army posts and casualties to Pakistani soldiers, our New Delhi correspondent reports quoting the officials.

"At about 0030 hours, the Pakistan army initiated unprovoked ceasefire violation by firing of small arms and shelling with mortars along the Line of Control (LoC) in Nowshera sector of Rajouri district," a Defence spokesman said adding the Indian army responded strongly and effectively.

This is the fourth consecutive day of firing and shelling by the Pakistan army targeting civilian areas on the Indian side in Poonch and Rajouri districts in which a baby and an Indian soldier have been killed and two others injured so far.

On Monday, Pakistani troops had shelled areas along the LoC in Mankote and Shahpur sectors of Poonch district, the officials said.

Pakistan troops had also shelled forward areas and villages along the de facto frontier in Tanghar area of North Kashmir on Tuesday, they added.
