Top 5 stories of the day

Happy Victory Day to all Bangladeshis around the world. As we celebrate the country's 52nd Victory Day, the newsroom has been reminiscing on stories of the war, shared by their families.

In the world of news, it seems to be a little slow and if you have not taken a look at all the latest updates then don't worry, we have the top stories you need to follow here in bite-sized portions.

Victory Day

Today, the nation is celebrating its 52nd Victory Day by paying tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the country during the Liberation War. Bangladesh emerged as an independent country after the Pakistani occupation forces surrendered following a bloody nine-month war. After 51 years of liberation, on this day, the people of the country are once again reminded of our dark struggle and what it took to overcome the challenges. Various organisations arranged programmes to celebrate the day. Children, with their parents or teachers, visited the National Memorial in Savar to pay homage the martyrs of the Liberation War. The city has been painted in colours of green and red to mark the day. The prime minister and president also paid homage to the martyrs of the Liberation War.

List of Razakars may take more time

The list of war-time collaborators that was made in 2019 was scrapped following widespread criticism. In April this year, a three-member committee headed by Shajahan Khan was tasked with the job of making a list of Razakars. Today they said it may take another six months to publish the full list of war-time collaborators, Razakars and Al-Badar. They said they are exercising utmost caution to ensure no one is wrongfully listed as a Razakar in the list. The previous list was widely criticised for listing freedom fighters as war-time collaborators. What will happen this time?

Mercury starting to dip

The temperature across the country is starting to fall as we enter mid-December. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department today said a mild cold wave is passing over some parts of the country, with northern district Chuadanga reporting a temperature of 9.5 degree Celsius. In Dhaka, the mercury dipped to 17.1 degree Celsius. The temperature is likely to fall further both in Dhaka and other parts of the country.  However, there is no chance of Dhaka facing a cold wave this month.

Fardin death

Police and Rab have recently said that Buet student Fardin Noor Parash died by suicide by jumping off a bridge into Shitalakkhya river. Fardin's peers went to DB office following this development to get details about their claim. Today, a group of Buet students went to the Rab headquarters to look at evidence collected by Rab during their investigation on Fardin's death. The students did not provide information regarding their visit to Rab headquarters today and said they will hold a press conference in this regard tomorrow. Meanwhile, Amatullah Bushra, the prime accused in Fardin's murder case who has been in jail since November 10, questioned why she was not getting bail even though she is innocent, her parents told The Daily Star after visiting her in jail. The DB chief had earlier said they found no involvement of Bushra in the case and they would inform court about the matter.

Malaysia landslide

At least 16 people died when a landslide struck a campsite at a Malaysian farm today with rescuers scouring the muddy terrain for nearly 20 people still missing. According to Nga Kor Ming, the local government development minister, 61 people so far have been found safe after the predawn landslide near the town of Batang Kali, just outside the capital Kuala Lumpur and near a mountain casino resort.

Tigers could use some resolve

Bangladesh need 471 more runs to win or, as improbably, two more days' batting to salvage a draw in the first Test against India in Chattogram. They reached 42 without loss at the close of play on the third day after India set them a winning target of 513. Cheteshwar Pujara and Shubman Gill hit centuries as India piled on 258 for two in their second innings after the bowlers dismissed Bangladesh for a paltry 150. Bangladesh will need a miracle to win, but what most of the stoic cricket fans of the nation would be happy with is a semblance of a fight, instead of a capitulation, which has been the norm for the country's Test cricket.
