National Human Rights Commission Chairman Kamal Uddin Ahmed has questioned why homes and institutions have turned into gas chambers.

He was addressing a seminar at the Hotel Bengal Blueberry in the capital's Gulshan today.

Expressing concern over the "unavailability" of reports on multiple explosions at different locations, the NHRC chief said the reports remain unpublished despite promises to make those public within three to five days after the incidents.

Even if someone is found responsible for such incidents as per those reports, they are not punished, he observed.

Kamal Uddin said people pay taxes to some organisations concerned. "Shouldn't it be their responsibility to look into things which cause such explosions due to accumulation of methane or carbon monoxide from air conditioning units?"

He asked why the city corporations cannot go door-to-door for inspection and prevent such incidents.

"Why such incidents are recurring?... These may not be acts of terrorism."

He said the country was facing a crisis of proper management.
