A good initiative, but still a long way to go

The instalment of CCTV cameras in Dhaka city buses has generated a positive response among female commuters as well as bus staffers. They believe the initiative has brought a change in the behavioural pattern of the overall commuters.

They also said the pilot initiative taken by the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs on mid-October this year is just a drop in the ocean.

The CCTV cameras have been installed in 100 buses of Projapoti Paribahan Ltd (Mohammadpur to Abdullahpur), Rajdhani Super Services Ltd (Chandra to Demra Staff Quarter), Basumoti Transport Ltd (Gabtoli to Gazipur) and Poristhan Paribahan Ltd (Ghatarchar to Abdullahpur) in Dhaka.

Dhaka metro rail: Rally, fireworks to adorn grand opening

The authorities are completing the last-minute preparations before the grand opening of the country's first metro rail tomorrow. There will be fireworks to adorn the grand ceremony. More than one lakh people would gather at Diabari to mark the country's historic moment.

Workers are busy cleaning the station areas and also police personnel have taken position at the entrance of the station. Ruling Awami League is preparing to assemble a huge crowd to mark the launching of metro rail and to showcase one of the biggest achievements of the government.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate Bangladesh's first metro rail in the capital's Uttara at 11:00am.

Garment exporters see moderate recovery in 2023

Local apparel suppliers are expecting moderate recovery in exports in 2023 as sales in the Western world are gradually gaining pace with a new normal arising from the Russia-Ukraine war and falling prices of petroleum products.

One variant of the crude oil was selling at $79.56 per barrel in international markets yesterday whereas it had surpassed $123 at one point in the outgoing year because of the severe fallout of the war. As a result, Christmas sales were also upbeat, with old stockpiles of clothing of international retailers and brands worth billions of US dollars being sold off.

Nearly 100 Starlinks 'active' in Iran, says Elon Musk

Around 100 Starlink internet terminals are currently operating in Iran, SpaceX chief Elon Musk said Monday. The tycoon had promised to bring the satellite internet network to the country in September.

Starlink has more than 2,000 tiny satellites orbiting just a few hundred kilometers above Earth, providing internet access to the users.

Rangpur city corporation elections underway

Using electronic voting machines (EVMs), the voting in Rangpur City Corporation elections began at 229 polling centres at 8:30am. It will continue till 4:30pm today.

This is the third election since the city corporation was formed in 2012. The total number of voters in Rangpur City Corporation is 4,26,470.

The Awami League nominee for mayor is Hosne Ara Lutfa Dalia while the JP nominee is Mostafizar Rahman, who was also elected mayor in 2017. Apart from AL and JP nominees, seven others are running for mayor. AL leader Latifur Rahman is running as an independent candidate.

The BNP boycotted the election.
