Tigers have Aussies on the ropes after Day One

'Jabe, Jabe!' (They'll fall, they'll fall') was the chant from the crowd as Shakib Al Hasan came on to bowl, and soon spin from both ends gave the small but vocal Sher-e-Bangla crowd what they wanted. Two leg-before dismissals and a suicidal run-out which showed that pressure gets to Australia too have installed the home side firmly in the driving seat after a pulsating first day, which Australia ended on 18 for three in response to Bangladesh's 260 all out. Bangladesh were 10 for three at one stage when superb half-centuries from Shakib and Tamim Iqbal, both playing their 50th Tests, salvaged the situation. Opener Matt Renshaw and skipper Steven Smith will be the anxious overnight batsmen hoping to do the same tomorrow.

But it has been Bangladesh's day as they happily trot off the field with a lead of 244 runs and three Australians sent back the hut in no time. The pitch will only get more difficult if the sun shines as it did for most of today, apart from a 36-minute rain break after tea.

6.6 overs, Aus 14 for 3 - A wasted wicket. Nathan Lyon, sent in as the nightwatchman, lasts just five balls as Shakib Al Hasan's signature arm-ball traps him plumb in front, and there was no doubt about this one. Aussies on the ropes!

6.1 overs Aus 14 for 2 - Usman Khawaja dabs the ball to the leg side and sets off for a suicidal run, only to be sent back from halfway down the pitch. Keeper Mushfiqur does the smart thing and underarms the ball to Soumya Sarkar, who dives into the stumps. Third-umpire is called, and Khawaja is found inches short.

5.2 overs, AUS 9 for 1 - Mehedi Hasan gets David Warner plumb in front. The ball turns sharply and beats Warner's retreating defensive shot. The ball is shown to just graze the outside part of the top of leg stump, so even if Warner had reviewed for the second ball in a row the call would have stayed with the trigger-happy Aleem Dar. Dar had given Waner out in the previous ball, but a review showed a huge inside edge.

So a quick end it is. Nasir Hossain and Mehedi Hasan's 42-run partnership for the seventh wicket, which was interrupted by a 36-minute rain break, raised hopes that the home side would reach 300 on a difficult pitch and put pressure on the Australians. But Bangladesh could add just 20 runs after Mehedi's departure as Nathan Lyon and Ashton Agar got among the wickets, taking three each after fast bowler Pat Cummins shot through Bangladesh's top order with three of his own in the morning session.

260 is still a fighting total on this wicket, but all will depend on how Bangladesh bowling attack bowl to David Warner, Steve Smith and Co.  

78.5 overs, BD 260 all out - Shafiul Islam hit a few lusty blows belying his stature, but he tries one too many when attempting to hit Ashton Agar over mid-on, resulting in a leading edge that was happily and simply pouched by Josh Hazlewood.

75.2 overs, BD 246/9 - An arm ball from off-spinner Nathan Lyon beats left-hander Taijul Islam's defensive prod and Aleem Dar has no doubt. Lyon celebrates his 250th Test wicket in his 68th Test.

74.3 overs, BD 246/8 - Nasir lunges forward with bat and pad close together and the ball hits him in line, but umpire Ian Goulkd is unsure whether the ball hit the pad or bat first. Aussie skipper Steven Smith had no such doubt and signalled for the review, which showed ball hitting pad first and going on to hit middle stump.

Mehedi Hasan was batting well with Nasir Hossain and the duo were looking to take the score past 250, but their seventh-wicket partnership is cut short by Nathan Lyon. Australia are through to he Bangladesh tail as Taijul Islam joins Nasir. It could either be a quick end to the innings or some frustrating times for the Aussies.

71.3 overs, BD 240/7 - Lyon gets one to turn back into Mehedi, going past his forward defence, hitting the pad and lobbing up for short leg to take a simple catch. Umpire Aleem Dar raises his finger and Mehedi walks off with a rueful smile.

Mehedi Hasan slashes with his bat and the ball flies over the slip cordon and races away to the boundary for four. Cummins dropped it short and Mehedi did not hesitate to open his arms.

After the shower the sky clears up as the crowd are greeted by enchanting sunlight yet again. There was a 36-minute break before the players came back again.

68.5 overs, BD 222/6 -Nasir Hossain strikes a delightful boundary off Pat Cummins, first ball after the restart.

Rain has started to come down quite heavily. The grounds staff are covering the centre wickets. Bangladesh are 218 for six in 66.4 overs.

Nasir Hossain takes the attack to Nathan Lyon as he goes down the wicket to the pitch of the delivery and lifts the ball over mid-off for four.

Mehedi Hasan is the new batsman at the crease. He late cuts Ashton Agar for four to bring up Bangladesh's 200.

Mehedi is trying some shots as well. The atmosphere has gotten rather gloomy and rain could hamper play. The ball has kept low on certain occasions throughout the Bangladesh innings.

60.1 overs, BD 198/6 - Mushfiqur Rahim is caught in front of his stumps. He plays forward to a Ashton Agar delivery but is given out leg-before-wicket by the umpire. The captain goes after his review came to no avail. Ball pitched in line and Mushfiq was decieved by the slider coming in with the angle.

Bangladesh are 198 for 5 at the end of 60 overs. Since the breakthrogh the Bangladesh innings have slowed down.

The players return after Tea. Mushfiqur Rahim goes back on the crease to execute a cut shot oo Agar and ball races to the boundary for four.

The players go off for Tea on Day 1. Bangladesh are 190 for five. Mushfiqur Rahim is on 12 while Nasir Hossain is batting on naught.

Shakib Al Hasan achived the unique feat of being the quickest to reach the 3500 Test runs and 150 wickets. He beat all-rounders like Gary Sobers, Imran Khan and Kapil Dev on his way to the feat.

Australia have comeback to gain the upper hand in this session. Bangladesh fought well when Shakib and Tamim were at the crease but Australia spinners have been able to break the partnership as the duo returned to the pavillion.

53.6 overs, BD 188/5 - Shakib Al Hasan edges a flighted turner from Nathan Lyon and is caught by captain Steve Smith at slip. Shakib tentatively pushes at the delivery and is out for 84.

The wear and tear even on the first day has seen some uneven bounce.  A Pat Cummins delivery stays very low and Mushfiqur gets his bt down on time.

Cummins continue to get his angles right as he squares up Shakib, who closes the face of his bat a bit early. Ball falls short of mid on.

49.3 overs, BD/175/4 - Bangladesh batsman sure do like taking risks. Mushfiqur reverse sweeps Maxwell, ball loops up but falls safe ang goes to the boundary.

Hazzlewood is getting some nice bounce from this wicket and causing problems for Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim. Ball is nipping back quite a bit now. Mushfiq will have to be careful about his defensive shots.

45.3 overs, BD 165/4 - Tamim absolutely mistimes a cut shot from Glenn Maxwell and gives away his wicket. Warner takes an easy catch as Bangladesh lose their fourth wicket.

Mushfiqur Rahim joins Shakib Al Hasan at the crease. Shakib is batting at 75. Bangladesh were goiung well about rebuilding their innings but losing Tamim is a major setback at this point of the game. Tamim and Shakib's partnership ends at 155.

Pat Cummins is shaping the ball nicely away from the left handers and he beats the outside edge of Tamim Iqbal's bat and keeper fumbles resulting in ball racing to the boundary.

Glenn Maxwell is introduced to the attack. In his second over Tamim goes after him as the ball flies over extra cover yet again and to the boundary for four.

Hazzlewood comes back into the attack and Shakib Al Hasan pulls a short one from the paceman to the boundary for four.

Tamim scores consecutive fours off Pat Cummins with two masterful shots. The second one is an exquisite drive through the covers as Tamim looks to take the attack to the Aussies.

39.1 overs, BD 128/3 - Tamim tucks a short delivery from Pat Cummins to square leg to bring up his fifty.Tamim reaches 50 in 120 balls, courtesy of two fours and three sixes.

Bangladesh innings is coming along nicely owing to the century stand between Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan. Both batsman are looking to use their feet against spinner Nathan Lyon.

Tamim smashes Nathan Lyon for consecutive boundaries. The first one went over extra cover for six and the second one flies over long on for four. Both times Tamim charged down the ground to hinder Lyon's line and length.

Pat Cummins continues to be dangerous as Tamim Iqbal slashes hard at a delivery outside the off stump. The ball luckily misses the edge of the bat and flies to the keeper.

34.3 overs, BD 110/3 - Shakib tucks Lyon for a single to bring on the 100 partnership. The duo brings up the century partnership in 189 balls.

Josh Hazzlewood and Nathan Lyon have started the second session for Australia. Shakib capitalizes on a short and wide delivery from Lyon and a misfield from Ashton Agar sees the ball race to the boundary.

29.6 overs, BD 102/3 - Tamim edges one off Hazzlewood but ball falls short of man at slip.

28.5 overs, BD 99/3 - Shakib Al Hasan scores his 22nd Test fifty by driving Agar though backward point for two runs. He reaches 50 in just 66 balls with seven boundaries.

End of first session of play

The session has been an interesting one. Pat Cummins dominated proceedings early on as he picked up the wickets of Soumya Sarkar, Imrul Kayes and Sabbir Rahman early on. Bangladesh fought back with Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan consolidating the innings after the early loss of wickets.

Tamim has gone after Lyon in the 26th over and picked up a six before following up with a boundary.

Bangladesh ends the first session with the score on 96 for the loss of three wickets. Tamim and Shakib's fantastic 86-run stand saw Bangladesh gain some ground after a terrible start. Shakib Al Hasan is batting on 48 and Tamim Iqbal is on 33. Earlier, Bangladesh lost three early wickets with the score on 10 runs.

25.3 overs, BD 86/3 -Tamim goes after Lyon and drives him over the cover region for six. Tamim showing his class here.

End of 25 Overs

Left-arm orthodox spinner Ashton Agar is brought into the attack. Tamim tries to unnecessarily reverse sweep him. The ball goes wide of the lone slip fielder and the batsmen run two.

Bangladesh are 79 for 3 at the end of 25 overs. Shakib Al Hasan cuts the last delivery from Agar for four with cries for catch from the Aussie fieldsman but ball falls short of backwards point.

There is already some evidence worrying uneven bounce on this wicket. Lyon's deliveries have often times risen sharply while keeping pretty low at other times.

Shakib was caught off-guard by a rising Josh Hazzlewood delivery but he made sure to play with soft hands.

20.1 overs, BD 61/3 - Shakib Al Hasan top edges a sweep but the ball falls safe and the batsmen run two. That completes the 50 run stand between Shakib and Tamim Iqbal in 97 balls.

End of 20 overs

Shakib Al Hasan is batting on 30 and Tamim Iqbal is on 17 runs. Bangladesh are 59 for the loss of three wickets.

Nathan Lyon ripped one which turned sharply after pitching on off. Lyon was pretty unlucky not to find the outside edge as batsman was beaten all ends up. Shakib Al Hasan paddles the next delivery to the fine leg boundary for four.

After a period of quiet and calm Shakib has started to live dangerously again. He slashes at a delivery from Pat Cummins which was far too close to cut. The ball flies away through the slip cordon and despite the effort from the man at slip he was unable to latch on to the ball as it went for four.

Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal have tried to steady the innings. After taking the attack to the Aussies in the initial period they have tried to play the last few overs with more consideration. Shakib is batting on 15 and Tamim has scored 17 from 45 balls. Bangladesh are 44/3 after 15 overs.

9.6 overs, BD 42/3 -Shakib Al Hasan drives uppishly but ball flies over point and races to the boundary.

Tamim and Shakib have tried to play counter attacking cricket. Bangladesh still looking to keep that positive vibe they showed before the series began. Probably not a bad idea to put some pressure on the Aussie attack.

For all the talk of spinners dictating terms in this Test match, it's been Pat Cummins's day. He found the edge of Shakib's bat bu the ball flew between the gully and thrird slip for four.

6.6 overs -Nathan Lyon comes into the attack for Australia and Tamim lofts the ball over extra cover for six.

Bangladesh got a rude awakening very early in this Test series as they lost three quick wickets within the first four overs of the first Test match.

Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan are at the crease.

3.6 overs, BD 10/3 - Sabbir Rahman edges the first delivery he faces from Cummins. Dismal start for Bangladesh in this first Test. Cummins picks up his third wicket this morning.

1.5 overs, BD 10/1 - Soumya Sarkar falls after edging a Pat Cummins delivery to Handscomb at gully. A rising delivery from Cummins and Soumya was caught unaware by the length. He got squared off and fends off the delivery.
