Bangladesh have started their two-day warm-up match against a New Zealand XI by winning the toss and choosing to bat first at the Lincoln University Ground in Christchurch, New Zealand.

UPDATES:

Bangladesh 411 for six in 96.1 overs at close. Stumps were called on Day 1 following the wicket of Nayeem Hasan, out leg-before after scoring 12 off 19 deliveries. Khaled Ahmed remained unbeaten on naught.

Abu Jayed was the fifth Bangladesh wicket to fall, out after scoring 23 off 26 deliveries. Earlier, Bangladesh got off to a terrific start with a century opening stand between Tamim Iqbal (45) and Shadman Islam. Shadman struck a team-high 67 off 113 deliveries to show his Test sensibilities. Liton Das too got in amongst the runs with a 62-run knock. Mahmudullah Riyad and Mehedi Hasan Miraz then combined in a 136-run partnership to take Bangladesh close to the 400-run mark. The practice match helped Bangladesh batsmen to spend some time in the middle and almost all their key players got in amongst the runs.

Bangladesh 381 for four in 91 overs. Both Mahmudullah Riyad and Mehedi Miraz struck half-centuries to see Bangladesh put on a strong total on the board against New Zealand XI. Mahmudullah struck 59 off 60 deliveries in an innings spanning 73 minutes, laced with eight fours and a six. Mehedi too stuck around to reach 51 off 67 deliveries with six fours and two sixes. The duo retired following the twin 50s.

After Riyad and Mehedi retired, Taijul fell for 14 as Tigers lost their fourth wicket with the score on 381. Abu Jayed and Nayeem Hasan are the batsmen at the crease.

Bangladesh 320 for 3 in 80 overs. Mahmudullah 42 off 43 , Miraz 31 off 49. As Mazhar just said...."Mama... Das, Soumya retired after tea..Mahmudullah and Miraz came to bat after tea".

Liton retired after a 62 off 91 deliveries, laced with six fours. Soumya also retired at 41.

And this just in from the shady yet sunny Mazhar Uddin, our reporter right where the action is taking place: "Mama ball is coming on to the bat nicely.. typical one day pitch in Lincoln. Not much of movement though the weather remained overcast whole day. No express seamer in the opposition, except Adam Milne."

-- Not sure why he thinks it is a letter to his long-suffering and saintly mother, but the rest of it makes sense. Not much in the pitch, it seems, but the Tigers won't mind the confidence boost.

At tea, Bangladesh reached 245 for three Das 62 off 91 Soumya 41 off 75: Like the first one, the second session also belonged to Bangladesh. They lost just two wickets for the addition of 132 runs. The ever-impressive Shadman, yet to put a foot wrong ihn his brief international career, was caught off the hook at deep fine leg. Mominul Haque's dismissal was a little disappointing as he guided a harmless ball straight to third slip. All told, Bangladesh's future stars -- Liton Kumar and Soumya Sarkar -- are now handling conditions pretty well at tea.

Bangladesh 151 for three in 40.3 overs: Mominul Haque tries to guide a length delivery from the pacer and is caught at third slip. Disappointing end for Bangladesh's Test specialist. Mominul c Kelly b Nuttall 20 (30b, 4x2)

Bangladesh 120 for 2 in 34.2 overs: Shadman Islam's vigil ends when he goes for a pull shortly after lunch and is caught at long leg. Shadman  c McClure b Sears 67 (113b, 4x9)

Despite Tamim Iqbal's dismissal on the stroke of the interval, Bangladesh will be taking a happy lunch on 113 for one. Rookie opener Shadman Islam is certainly earning his stripes in his first innings in the alien conditions of New Zealand. He has played within himself and shown great judgement outside off stump to remain unbeaten on 62.

LUNCH Bangladesh 113/1 after 30.5 overs. Shadman Islam 62 (102 balls, 4x9): Tamim Iqbal's departure, caught at short midwicket, signals the lunch break on the first day of the two-day warm-up. Tamim c Popli b Coburn 45 (83b, 4x5, 6x1)

Bangladesh 78/0 in 20 overs. Tamim 23 (46), Shadman 50 (75): Shadman Islam, the opener who has one Test against the West Indies at home late last year under his belt, reached his fifty off 75 balls with a cracking cover drive in the 20th over.

BACKGROUND:

The Tigers won the toss and in the opposition is Adam Milne, who troubled the Tigers with his pace on a similarly joyless tour in 2016-17.

The under-siege Tigers are injury-ravaged and after a spiritless 3-0 loss in the preceding series against hosts New Zealand, they will be desperate to get some good vibes going in this longer-version practice game ahead of the three-match Test series against the hosts.

The match will feature all members of the Bangladesh squad not currently laid low with injury. 11 batsmen can bat and 11 players can take the field, but stand-in skipper Mahmudullah Riyad and coach Steve Rhodes will be able to call upon the full squad to show their Test readiness.
