Told them to play their hearts out for the country: Mash
Bangladesh's fortune changed with the change of colour as Tigers put a disastrous Test series behind them to pull off their first victory against West Indies in this tour.
Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan's record 207-run partnership – the highest second-wicket partnership in matches between West Indies and Bangladesh, paved the way for victory but it was skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza's return that really revived the side.
Mashrafe suggested that it was not that difficult to inspire the side which was facing another threat of a debacle after an early loss of wicket, in a pitch where the ball seamed early on yesterday.
"I did not say anything, just reminded them to play their hearts out and to lift their spirits as they are playing for their country," Mashrafe replied when asked by Danny Morrison how he revitalized the team.
"All we needed was a start and now we just need to take the momentum forward," he added.
"What has happened [the Test series], has happened. This is a new series. If we start off well, everything will fall into place. That's what happened today. Hopefully we can maintain this form."
It was in this same venue where Bangladesh pulled off a memorable 67-run victory in the Super 8 phase of the World Cup. "I can still remember the win against South Africa in 2007, I think this wicket can talk on our behalf," Mashrafe said, while crediting Tamim Iqbal (130*) and Shakib Al Hasan (97) for setting up the platform for Bangladesh's victory. "I think it was difficult to bat initially but Tamim and Shakib played extremely well and applied themselves sensibly."
The skipper also praised Mushfiqur Rahim's 11-ball cameo which propelled Bangladesh towards a commendable total.
"The cameo at the end by Mushfiqur was just the kind of innings that gives you the momentum. We always knew if we can bowl well after putting something in the range of 280 runs."
