Grim morning makes England grimace
Grim morning would probably be an understatement if you support England, as the visitors lost five wickets in an extended morning session on the second day to stumble at 163 for 8 at lunch, still trailing Bangladesh's first innings total of 220 by 57 runs.
England, who lead the series 1-0 and resumed on 50-3, were reduced to 163 for eight by teenage offie Mehedi Hasan Miraz who completed his second five-wicket haul in as many matches. Mehedi became the first Bangladeshi player and only the second off-spinner to bag two five-fors in his first two Tests today.
After the opening day witnessed 13 wickets fall, the 19-year-old Mehedi, who picked up six wickets in Chittagong on debut, sent back Moeen Ali (10) early before Ben Stokes fell for a duck to left-arm spinner Taijul Islam off a bat-pad catch.
Joe Root offered the lone resistance for England with a fighting half-century as he made 56 off 122 balls before he was out leg before by left-arm spinner Taijul Islam.
Jonny Barstow, who made 24, gave him some support in their 45-run sixth wicket stand but that could not deny Bangladesh from gaining an upper hand after play resumed half-an-hour early.
Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim turned to his young off-spinner Mehedi to break the partnership and the youngster responded superbly, dismissing Bairstow leg before with the first delivery of his new spell.
Chris Woakes, 12 not out and Adil Rashid, seven not out survived until the break and are now facing a titanic task to take England to a respectable position.
