Domingo resigns as Bangladesh coach: BCB

Russell Domingo has resigned from the post of the Bangladesh cricket team head coach.

The South African relayed the news to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Tuesday, informed BCB cricket operations committee chairman Jala Yunus to The Daily Star today.

"Yes, he [Domingo] has resigned. He rendered his resignation letter to us," Yunus said.

BCB had a contract with the South African coach till the 2023 ODI World Cup, which is set to be played in October-November in India.

Domingo resigned just two days after Bangladesh lost the two-match Test series 2-0 against India at home. The South African had already left for South Africa for the Christmas break following the Dhaka Test, which the Tigers lost by three wickets after instigating hopes of their first-ever Test win over India. Yunus had indicated that the BCB was ready to move on from the South African shortly after that game.

"We need a team who has influence and impact on the team. There will soon be some changes [in the management]," Yunus told the reporters after the match.

Domingo was hired for the role of Bangladesh's head coach back in September 2019 after the BCB parted ways with Steve Rhodes following the Tigers' eighth-place finish in the first round of the ODI World Cup in England that year.

Under the South African, Bangladesh had an abysmal outing in the T20 World Cup in 2021 in the UAE and Oman but won T20I series against Australia and New Zealand that year. The Tigers' most historic Test victory, against New Zealand at Mount Maunganui in January this year, also came under his tutelage. Bangladesh also reached the summit of the ODI Super League table and won their first-ever ODI series against South Africa in their backyard before beating India in a home ODI series this year with Domingo in charge.

Domingo faced backlash for not being 'aggressive' enough and was also excused from overseeing the T20 unit just before the Asia Cup in September this year as Sridharan Sriram was roped in by the BCB as the technical consultant till the T20 World Cup in Australia.
