‘Filthy games’ fuel Imrul's fury over controversial DPL incident

Reacting to a wave of outrage sparked by Shinepukur Cricket Club's bizarre last-wicket dismissal against Gulshan Cricket Club in a Dhaka Premier League (DPL) fixture on Monday, Bangladesh opener Imrul Kayes did not hold back.

With seven runs needed and one wicket remaining, Shinepukur's survival hopes unravelled in a moment of pure farce. Batter Minhajul Abedin Sabbir failed to ground his bat despite a second chance at safety, allowing Gulshan wicketkeeper Alif Hasan to complete a delayed stumping. The result handed Gulshan a five-run win -- and a place in the Super League phase -- while pushing Shinepukur to the bottom of the table and likely relegation.

The moment, captured on video and widely circulated, triggered widespread disbelief. But for Imrul, the incident symbolised a deeper crisis. Taking to Facebook, he unleashed a scathing post that questioned not only the integrity of the players involved but the future of Bangladesh cricket itself.

"The media, cricketers, journalists, and commentators -- everyone is stunned and outraged by an incident that took place today. And the reason is crystal clear -- the disgraceful act that happened in the Dhaka Premier League has not only brought shame but has tainted the image of Bangladesh cricket," he wrote.

The 38-year-old, who recently retired from Test and first-class cricket, claimed the controversy extended beyond a single game, alleging that multiple teams had deliberately conspired to fix match outcomes.

"To stop one team from qualifying for the Super League, two other teams on a different ground shared points deliberately as part of a pre-planned arrangement! What kind of mockery is this?"

His criticism sharpened as he questioned the values of those involved. "If this is the state of our domestic cricket, then who will represent our national team in the future? In whose hands are we entrusting the nation's flag? Players who decide the outcome of a match even before stepping on the field -- how can they represent the country? It's shameful!"

Imrul accused certain players of selling out their futures for short-term gains. "Those who are being used to stage these filthy games have no future, because today they have sold their integrity."

He spoke passionately about the damage such actions could do to honest, aspiring cricketers. "Those of us who dream of representing Bangladesh work tirelessly day and night to achieve that dream. And yet, a handful of corrupt-minded individuals are destroying the entire cricketing structure of the country for their own gain."

Imrul, who has seven international centuries to his credit, concluded with a plea for accountability. "I strongly demand immediate and strict action against the individuals involved in this disgrace. If punishment cannot be ensured, then at the very least, today's match should be declared void and rescheduled.

"We cannot let Bangladesh cricket be ruined like this. If we remain silent today, there may not be a chance to speak out tomorrow."
