National selector Hannan Sarkar has stepped down from his position at the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) in order to focus on his coaching career.

Hannan confirmed the development to The Daily Star on Sunday, adding that he has submitted his resignation to the BCB on Saturday where he stated that he will continue working as a selector till the end of this month.

"There are no other reasons behind this decision. Everything was going really great. But I felt that coaching is my future career. I feel that I can contribute more from this position to Bangladesh cricket through coaching," the former national team batter said.

"What I was contributing as a selector was fine. But what I really felt was I should choose coaching as a future career for the long run. I was thinking about the matter for quite a long time. Now I have proceeded with it officially," he added.

Hannan insisted that he didn't feel any pressure while working as a national selector since March last year.

"I didn't feel any pressure. I enjoyed it very much. I always feel that I have the right to give my honest opinion all the time," Hannan said.

Hannan, who represented Bangladesh between 2002 and 2004 in 17 Tests and 20 ODIs, completed his Level 1 and Level 2 coaching courses from the BCB in 2010 and 2011 respectively.

The 42-year-old previously worked as batting coach and assistant coach in tournaments like Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League, Bangladesh Cricket League and Bangladesh Premier League while he also worked as a head coach for Dhaka Metro in the National Cricket League 2014.

Before joining as a national selector, Hannan was an age-group selector from July 2016 to February 2024 and during his charge, Bangladesh U-19 men's cricket team won the ICC U-19 World Cup for the first time in South Africa in 2020.
