Joty underlines Tigresses’ commitment before World Cup Qualifiers

Bangladesh women's team are set to depart for Pakistan tomorrow to compete in the ICC Women's ODI World Cup Qualifiers, set to begin on April 9.
The Nigar Sultana Joty-led side will have to face the likes of West Indies and Pakistan in the qualifiers but Joty remained confident in their ability to beat the bigger sides and underlined that all the players realise how important the tournament is.
With only two qualifying spots up for grabs in the six-team qualifying tournament, competition would be high but Joty remained hopeful.
"I think both teams are beatable because we have won against both teams," Joty said in a press conference in Mirpur today.
Although Bangladesh lost an away ODI series against West Indies in January, Joty said the team was carrying some confidence into the match against the Caribbean side, having won a game in the tour.
"Perhaps we play more regularly against Pakistan than the West Indies. But recently we played in West Indies and won a match there so we have some confidence," Joty added.
The skipper did not overlook the challenges of the qualifiers and was eager to build momentum early in the tournament.
"We will play Scotland and Ireland before facing West Indies and Pakistan. So, building momentum from the beginning I believe is crucial for the team. The surface will be the same for the West Indies and us. From that angle, Pakistan will have the edge, as it's their home condition. Still, if we can play well as a team and the batting unit can score runs, since in Pakistan we know there will be batting-friendly surfaces, we know our bowlers will support us," she said.
The Tigresses had to undergo a camp during the Eid festivities and Joty remarked that all the players realise how important the timing of the camp is in regards to preparing for an important ICC event.
"We didn't go to our families to celebrate Eid and had to practice even the day before Eid because we all know how important the tournament is for the team. When a team goes to play an ICC event, everyone takes special notice. The ICC also provides different opportunities when a team compete in an ODI World Cup. We all realise that this is a big deal for our careers. After we played in the last ODI World Cup and entered the FTP, our number of games increased by a lot. The players benefitted in terms of respect and in financial terms.
"For women's cricket, it's important to qualify for the World Cup and we did everything that was in our power even though it was tough to do during Ramadan. We even practised under lights because two of our matches will be under lights and every point is important.
"Every player is serious. We are also practising today since we will have two days of travel. So far, the preparation has been good and we will get practice matches there before the main tournament," she concluded.
The Tigress will begin their campaign against Thailand on April 10.
