Kohli surpasses Tendulkar’s record in Australia

After struggling in his outing on Day 1, the Indian batting stalwart Virat Kohli helped the visitors tighten their grip on the Perth Test.

Overcoming his recent lean patch in the longest format, Virat Kohli blazed his 30th Test ton and his first in Australia since 2018 on Day 3 of the opening Border-Gavaskar series Test in Perth.

The century marked Kohli's seventh in Tests in Australia - most by an Indian batter in the country - as he eclipsed Sachin Tendulkar to hold the record.

In the overall tally of visiting batters with most centuries in Australia, only England's Jack Hobbs (9) is ahead while Wally Hammond has as many as the former India captain.

Speaking to Fox Cricket after India declared their second innings following his unbeaten century, Kohli said, "I just wanted to contribute to the team's cause, I don't want to hang around just for the sake of it, I take pride in performing for the country."

Coming in to bat after Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul had already put India in the driving seat, Kohli took his time to establish himself before taking the attack to the Aussies in the latter half of his knock.

The knock, fashioned off 143 deliveries, comprised of eight fours and two maximums as India mounted a total of 534 for Australia.

The 36-year-old had arrived in Australia on the back of a string of low scores in the longest format. In the recently concluded home season, Kohli had scored a mere 192 runs off 10 innings.
