Mahfijul, Akbar guide Bangladesh Emerging to narrow win over SA in series opener

A composed half-century from opener Mahfijul Islam and a late flurry from captain Akbar Ali guided the Bangladesh Emerging Team to a thrilling three-wicket victory over South Africa Emerging in the opening match of the three-game one-day series at the Shahid Kamruzzaman Stadium in Rajshahi today.
Chasing a target of 302, Mahfijul laid a solid platform for the hosts with a fluent 89-ball 87, striking eight fours and two sixes. His innings gave Bangladesh early momentum before South Africa applied pressure in the middle overs through disciplined bowling and timely breakthroughs.
Bangladesh found themselves in trouble at 230 for 6 in the 43rd over, but Akbar Ali turned the tide with a 24-ball 41, supported by brisk unbeaten cameos from Rakibul Hasan (24* off 10) and Tofael Ahmed (24* off 20). Their late assault ensured Bangladesh crossed the finish line with two balls to spare.
Earlier, after being asked to bat first, South Africa posted a competitive 301 for 8, riding on half-centuries from Connor Esterhuizen (71 off 69) and Andile Simelane (61 off 39). Despite picking up three wickets, pacer Ripon Mondol proved expensive for Bangladesh, conceding 84 runs in his 10 overs. Ahrar Amin chipped in with two wickets.
The second match of the series will be played on Wednesday at the same venue.
