Miraz leads Khulna to BPL playoffs
Khulna Tigers became the fourth and last team to confirm their playoff berth in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League T20 after they beat Dhaka Capitals by six wickets during their last league match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur today.
Khulna skipper Mehedi Hasan Miraz struck an unbeaten 74 off 55 balls to make a light work in the 124-run chase as his partnership of 67 runs for the third wicket with Alex Ross (22) put them in a strong position after losing two early wickets.
Ross fell to Rahmat Ali in the penultimate delivery of the 10th over but Mehedi continued his good work with the bat and smashed five fours and four sixes to ensure Khulna's much-required victory with 19 balls to spare.
Khulna's win also ended Durbar Rajshahi's playoff hopes as they had to finish fifth in the points table with same 12 points as Khulna but Khulna progressed to the next phase due to having better net run rate.
Khulna will now face either Rangpur Riders or Chittagong Kings in the eliminator, scheduled on Monday. Khulna's opponents will be decided after the last league phase match of the ongoing tournament between table-toppers Fortune Barishal and Chittagong, scheduled later on the day.
Earlier, Tanzid Hasan Tamim smashed seven sixes and a four in his 37-ball 58-run innings but apart from his innings, none of the other Dhaka batters could make impactful performance that forced them to content with a below par score of 123-9 in their 20 overs.
Despite losing early wickets, Tanzid's brisk start gave Dhaka a decent start as they reached 58-2 at power-play. However, an unlike T20 knock by Farmanullah Safi who made seven off 20 balls put the pressure back on Dhaka.
Khulna's batting all-rounder William Bosisto then took two quick wickets of Safi and Tanzid in the same over to bring their side back in the contest and Khulna didn't need to look back since then as their bowlers took regular wickets to restrict their opponents to a below par score.
For Dhaka, Sabbir Rahman was the second highest scorer in the innings with 20 runs. Khulna's Hasan Mahmud and Bosisto took two wickets each in the innings.
