Sylhet end winless run, Dhaka’s misery continues
Sylhet Strikers ended their three-match losing streak to aggravate more misery on Dhaka Capitals as they registered a three-wicket win during their fourth match of the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League T20 at the jam-packed Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Friday.
Chasing a target of 194 runs, Zakir Hasan struck a brilliant 27-ball 58 featuring seven fours and three sixes while Rony Talukdar (30 off 20), Jaker Ali Anik (24 off 17) and skipper Ariful Haque (28 not out) all made decent contributions as they reached the target in 18.4 overs to complete their first win in the tournament which also made thousands of Sylhet fans crazy in the galleries.
Meanwhile, it was Dhaka's sixth consecutive defeat in the tournament and they remained the only side in the competition not to register any victory so far.
Earlier, both Liton Das (73 off 43 balls) and Munim Shahriar (52 off 47 balls) scored fifties and shared a 129-run stand for the second wicket to guide Dhaka to 193-6 in their stipulated overs – their highest total in the ongoing edition of the tournament – after they elected to bat first.
Sylhet, however, didn't get an ideal start in the run chase as they lost three quick wickets of Rahkeem Cornwall (0), George Munsey (11) and Aaron Jones (18) within the power-play.
Despite the fall of wickets, Sylhet batters didn't allow their run-rate to go below 10 per over since over number four and Zakir played a crucial role in maintaining that tempo.
Dhaka bowlers, on the other hand, got wickets at regular intervals but they also leaked runs which let Sylhet off the hook. Farmanullah Safi and Shubham Ranjane took two wickets each for Dhaka.
Earlier, Liton looked to be in fine touch after a long time and the stylish batter, who could not get a place in the playing XI in Dhaka's previous game, returned with a bang as he smashed 10 fours and a six before he was trapped in front by Cornwall (3-27) in the 16th over.
Sabbir showcased another blazing performance as he smashed 10-ball 23 while skipper Thisara Perera made nine-ball 18 to take their score close to the 200-run mark but it was not sufficient in the end.
